'Overland' is one of the projects of the Englishman 'Steve Overland' (among others also leader of the group 'FM' with two very good albums 'Atomic Generation' in 2018 and 'Synchronized' in 2020) and Swedish 'Tommy Denander' (among others 'Steve Walsh') whose last album 'Contagious' dates of 2018. No surprise for this last baby who is the fifth of this formation, we are on full foot in the melodic AOR from the first to the last title offering a nice variety and which is a bit of a catch-all of styles melodic of the 70s. So we navigate through compositions that do good and this from the first track 'Don't Give Up' which has a little disco side and which makes me think of the style of the 'Bee Gees' in the years 70, period 'Saturday Night Fever' or the mighty mid-tempo 'Never Say Die, with its syncopated introduction close to 'AC/DC' or 'Lost in the City' with riffs close to 'ZZ Top' or 'Closest Thing to Heaven' close to the westcoast or the magnificent blues/rock 'Changing Times' which oozes good blues that sticks to your skin or 'The Trouble with Love' with its funky side of 'Stevie Wonder' or still the beautiful ballad 'God Mades An Angel', very classic but so effective without forgetting a last 'Hole in My Heart' which ends the album with an addictive melody. In summary, this patchwork of compositions is very pleasant to listen to as if you had made a playlist of timeless tracks to go back a few decades and 'Scandalous' should appeal to a large audience loving very accessible melodic music... |
