'Lighthouse Sparrows' is a new Finnish progressive rock project initiated in 2019 by multi-instrumentalist 'Sami Sarhamaa' who has taken part in numerous recordings since the 1980s and singer and keyboardist 'Olli Huhtanen' and who is releasing his first album just 30 minutes, so between EP and LP. The year 2020 being a bit special with the health crisis that we are experiencing, they still managed to release this first baby which contains 5 small jewels of a refined and relaxing progressive rock that can recall certain atmospheric rock formations of the years 70/80.
It all starts in serenity with 'Gravest Danger' in a quiet atmosphere, the soft voice of 'Olli Huhtanen' agreeing perfectly to this style made of softness and serenity, some guitar riffs gently hardening the tone in the second part of the title, then, after a final in decrescendo with some piano notes, without transition, 'Scales' takes over in the same atmosphere and puts us on a little cloud, rocking us to the rhythm of a sweet melody with a beautiful 'Floydian' guitar solo in the middle of the title. It is also without transition (the first 3 titles follow each other without any pause between) that 'Shallow End' continues in this style with a crescendo at the end of the title, the keyboards having a preponderant place but leaving room for a new aerial guitar solo, then, the instrumental 'Deep End', after a new atmospheric introduction gains momentum in the first part, the bass line ensuring the rhythm of the whole and with a slow down the tempo in a beautiful atmospheric central part. The album ends with a new melodic gem ‘Gravity’ which is reminiscent of some melodic lines from ’RPWL’ .
In summary, this first baby of the Finns 'Lighthouse Sparrows' is very promising and offers us beautiful compositions in a calm and relaxing atmosphere, only a few passages being more energetic which destines 'The Deep End' to a loving audience an atmospheric progressive rock to listen to calmly with headphones... | |
