The Swedes of Avatarium' have been known in a style of ‘Doom’ metal (slow tempos, a heavy sound that gives an impression of blackness), but their last album is away because 'Hurricanes and Halos' would rather to bring closer to progressive rock/hard-rock from the 60's/70's with a very vintage sound that is brought by the 'Rickard Nilson' Hammond organ recalling the glorious hours of bands like 'Deep Purple' and the improvisations of the late ‘John Lord’ but also by the sound of the guitar of 'Marcus Jidell'. In addition, ‘Jennie-Ann Smith's vocals fit perfectly into this style with the same feeling that singers such as 'Ian Gillan' possess. But, we could also quote some artists like 'Huriah Heep' with for example 'The Sky at the Bottom of the Sea' and its energetic rhythmic. To retain only one title, I would say 'Medusa Child' which mixes genres and for its crescendo final on the same repeating melodic pattern that reminds me 'I Want You' from the 'Beatles' (yes, it's almost 50 years old !!). In short, 'Avatarium' show us that they know how to renew themselves and offer us a very successful return in the past which should please all lovers with a certain time when we discovered hard rock...
