'Carptree' did not get used to that because we had waited ‘Merger’ for 7 years (see here) and less than a year and a half later, by the end of 2018, its successor 'Subimago' is born and the Swedes offer us a new album with 8 compositions that seem to me more accessible from those of ‘Emerger' which I had put a logo for informed public while I tagged this latest opus in 'Accessible' while remaining in a progressive style dense and rich. 'Welcome' greets us by slowly unfolding its mysterious atmosphere reinforced by the use of keyboards supporting the hypnotic singing of 'Nickla Flinck' and an alternation between tension and relaxation as the band knows so well how to do it. With the beautiful 'By Your Own Device', I have the impression to hear the 'Genesis' of the period 'Duke' certainly due on the one hand to the singing but also to the sound of the keyboards and 'World Without Mind' which first swaying rhythmic structure gently prepares the rise of a magnificent second melodic part with a big work in the choirs. The following shows that the group can also be subjugated in a stripped style, 'Instead of Life' being of great emotional power and I could quote all the titles because it is very difficult to find a timeout in these compositions where the highlights follow each other one after the other. In summary, even if 'Subimago' is perhaps a little more accessible than these predecessors and could be a good gateway to all those who would like to discover a modern and sought-after progressive, it is also an album that gets better listening after listening, which for me is the sign without contest of great quality...
