'Strangefish' is an English progressive rock band that has not released an album since the very good 'Fortune Telling' of 2006 (see here) and 2018 sees the release of 'The Spotlight Effect' whose theme is a critique of the media world that analyzes all our actions to make us buy more and more. After 'Death Of Common Sense' which starts the album acoustically, 'Progress In Reverse' takes us into a progressive piece of over 8 minutes that could be a mix of 'Genesis' and 'Marillion' and where the keyboards are put forward and where the vocal harmonies are remarkable. Following the excellent 'Iconacon' and its changes of pace and atmosphere, then the ambiance is calmer for the beautiful ballad 'Summer Slips Away' where the vocal duo Steve / Jo works perfectly. But the key composition of the album is without contest 'Delicate' of nearly 18 minutes which embarks us for a very nice trip in a progressive style of the 70s in the manner of 'Genesis' where the different vocal and instrumental parts follow one another in a very natural way and ending with a memorable melody sung by 'Jo Whittaker' who shows all his singing talent in solo. The journey continues with the next title 'Spotlight Effect' of nearly 10 minutes which contains a largely instrumental sectional section between 2 calm and melodic sung parts. In summary, the English of 'Strangefish' return after more than 10 years of absence on the front of the progressive stage and this 'The Spotlight Effect' should appeal to all lovers of progressive loving long compositions... |
