'Aeternitas' is a German symphonic metal band that has already been around for 20 years and has released 4 lp: 'Tales of the Grotesque' is their 5th studio album. Like the previous opus 'House Of Usher', the theme is related to poems by ‘Edgar Allan Poe' which is definitely a source of inspiration for a lot of metal bands. For this latest opus the former female singer 'Alma Mathar' has been replaced by 'Julia Marou' but the style is still in continuity with their previous opus, that is to say, a classical and effective symphonic metal with a heavy sound and imposing orchestrations reminiscent of the Dutch of ‘Epica'. The highlight is the melodic lines that are all catchy from the first listening whether it is in the epic mid-tempo 'The Tell-Tale Heart', the energetic 'The Raven', the hopping 'A Case of Revenge' which should be able to blow up a whole public or 'Dream in a Dream' whose chorus does not let you go. To this, we must also note three titles to bring some variety to the whole : first the classic but very beautiful ballad 'Eldorado', then the mighty rock 'The Bells' which moves away from the symphonic metal and finally the bluesy 'Annabel Lee' where the duet Julia / Oliver offers us a nice complicity. In summary, this new album of the Germans of ‘Aeternitas' still shows an evolution and will certainly allow them to compete with the major formations of the genre because 'Tales of the Grotesque' will certainly be very well received by all lovers of symphonic metal...
