One Wilson can hide another: indeed, the American 'Jonathan Wilson' does not often release solo records but it must be said that he is busy between the compositions for different artists, the production of other artists as 'Father John Misty' (latest album 'Pure Comedy' here) and Roger Waters' tour as a guitarist. This 'Rare Birds' is a bit like what it represents, that is to say 50 years of music between pop and rock because and the least we can say is that this album is filled with very varied and beautiful accessible melodies. For proof, I will take the first two titles, first 'Trafalguar Square' which plunges us back to the 60s and the psychedelic period in England then we continue with the very calm 'Me' which is stained neo-prog and who would have very well could appear in an album of his namesake 'Steven Wilson' (see the last album of 'Blackfied' Here). The influences are multiple and we could quote in bulk 'The Beatles', ‘Jethro Tull', 'Pink-Floyd' or 'Peter Gabriel' that make all the compositions are intended for the general public. In addition, there is a real work to offer us arrangements drawn from the wealth of synthesizers but it is also for me the other side of the coin because the result is necessarily very electronic and, given the quality of compositions, the fact of having used real instruments would certainly have brought more depth to the whole but this is necessarily only subjective. In summary, 'Rare Birds' is a dense and rich album that makes us make a beautiful journey through in several decades of pop music and 'Jonathan Wilson's latest album should reach a wide audience...
