'Nine Skies' is a French progressive rock band that released its first studio album 'Return Home' at the end of 2017, which is a concept album about life in a big city of different characters, seen by an outside observer who points out absurdities of our present world. On the music side, we are embarked for 55 minutes of beautiful melodies in a variety of soft and subtle atmospheres, starting with 'Return Home' reminiscent of bands such as 'Pendragon' or 'Marillion'. The following 'Season of Greed' is a peaceful ballad introducing an acoustic guitar and a flute. With ‘The Blind Widower', it consists of 3 parts with an incursion into jazz-rock where the piano and saxophone play a beautiful duet and then a part between East and West where the acoustic guitar and the flute takes over which leaves room for a more classical last sung part. With 'Roses Never Hatch' and its multi-faceted and beautiful melodic lines, we return to a much more conventional progressive. The only regret I would have is the use of fade out because some titles could still take a few steps and offer us a real end. In summary, 'Nine Skies' shows yet again that France has good surprises in the field of progressive rock and this 'Return Home' should be well received by the whole progressive sphere but, because of its accessibility, could also reach a wider audience...
