The 2 ex 'Dream Theater', 'David Sherinian' and 'Mike Portnoy' who already have busy schedules have managed to find time to create a new project 'Sons Of Apollo' and this for the best. How to say, with this first opus 'Psychotic Symphony', I have the feeling to listen to the child of 'Dream Theater' and 'Deep Purple', era of 'Made In Japan' and 'Made In Europe', that is to say that they mix a good 70s hard-rock with his guitar solos and unbridled keyboards and progressive rock/metal with his usual breaks of rhythms ('Mike Portnoy' is of course the centerpiece of the rhythm section). The first title 'God of the Sun' very oriental is the perfect illustration with an introduction where keyboards fill the space to start on a pulsating rhythm reminiscent of the best hours of 'Rainbow', then break of rhythm for continue on a slow part that rises to power to explode on a frenetic instrumental part a little like 'ELP' and finally the central theme that returns for the final. In summary, 'Sons Of Apollo' is for me a very good surprise at the end of 2017 because our two ex 'Dream Theater' show that they have this talent to mix genres but, suddenly, this album risk to please only a certain audience because it requires to adhere at the same time to classic hard-rock and progressive rock...
