'Kaprekar's Constant' is a project bringing together different artists of the progressive scene and created by the two instrumentalists 'Nick Jefferson' and 'Al Nicholson' in 2016 for a first album in 2017 (see here) and I discovered them with this 2nd opus 'Depth of Field' released in September 2019. In a progressive style reminiscent of the big bands of the 70s like 'Genesis', 'Renaissance', 'Barclay James Harvest' or 'Jethro Tull' (by the way 'Ian Anderson' lends his voice to the second part of 'Rosherville'), the English offer us 7 tracks with an alternation between long development and shorter compositions but always with very melodic constructions between pop, rock and folk and moreover relatively accessible. The album begins with the first part of 'Rosherville' in a peaceful atmosphere and we discover the vocal duo 'Dorie Jackson' and 'Bill Jefferson' which works perfectly and which brings a serenity to the set especially that instrumental arrangements go in the same direction with for example the use of the flute. The sequel is the image of this first title with for example the 10 minutes of 'Ghost Planes' with a melody reminiscent of artists like 'Al Stewart' or 'The Nightwatchman' which begins in an atmosphere close to 'Emerson Lake & Palmer' and then unrolls a beautiful melody that 'Dorie Jackson' illuminates with her sweet voice. The major piece of the album is without contest 'White Star's Sunrise' which, with its 23 minutes, embark us on a saga with melodic lines all equally remarkable as other in a peaceful and serene atmosphere.

In short, the English of 'Kaprekar's Constant' released a second album full of poetry and we offer a progressive rock likeable and accessible that should fill all those who favor the soft side of this style...
