On this Christmas day, here is an EP containing songs for the occasion but when I have told you that the lullaby 'Sweet Night' that everyone certainly knows from having heard it many times during their childhood is covered by the duo 'Jon Schaffer' and 'Matt Barlow', respectively guitarist of the extreme metal band 'Iced Earth' and former singer of the same group, you will certainly be a little surprised but it is indeed the reality. So of course, these covers are a little more muscular than the originals and our two artists offer us four covers of Christmas carols and covers of two old fairly soft tracks of 'Iced Earth', 'I Died For You' and 'Watching Over Me', the seventh track being a magnificent semi-acoustic from 'Silent Night'. The four Christmas carols are therefore 'We Three Kings' written by 'John Henry Hopkins Jr.' in 1857 whose interpretation can recall the ballads of 'Scorpions', the sound of the guitar recalling the sounds of 'Rudolf Schenker', then 'Silent Night' begins calmly but gradually grows and is transformed quickly enough in a magnificent metal power ballad, then 'Do You Hear What I Hear?' which dates from 1962 and which was written by 'Noel Regney' and composed by 'Gloria Shayne', in turn undergoes a more energetic turn than the original and finally the very known 'Little Drummer Boy' which has been sung by many artists and which is covered for the occasion in semi-acoustics and transformed in a remarkable way. In short, this short album of Christmas songs readapted in a little more muscular versions allows me to wish a Merry Christmas to all myprogmusic readers... | |
