The Norwegian group of gothic metal 'Midnattsol' had not released an album since 2011 and fans were looking forward to this 4th studio recording 'The Aftermath'. After the eviction of 'Liv Kristine' from 'Leaves Eyes' (see their latest album here), 'Carmen Elise Espenæs' invited her sister to participate in this new album and the least we can say is that their 2 voices work perfectly because Liv is not only a punctual guest but sings on all the compositions. Overall, the atmosphere of 'The Aftermath' is melancholy and the style is between folk and metal with 3 compositions in Norwegians that reinforce the traditional side. Note the medieval Swedish ballad 'Herr Mannelig' often taken over by metal or folk formations as had done 'Haggard' on the album 'Eppur si Muove' (voir here). In summary, even if Norwegians of ‘Midnattsol' have never played in the court of the metal great bands, they show that they have passed a course with this latest album that is revealed listening after listening and 'The Aftermath' should delight all those which gravitate between folk and symphonic metal... | |
